Synthetic Opioids are a type of medicine created in labs with a molecular structure that resembles that of natural Opioids generated from the Opium poppy. Though the chemical makeup of Synthetic Opioids and “natural” variants (such as many prescription Opioids) is similar, Synthetic Opioids are wholly man-made — usually in a pharmaceutical laboratory. Natural or non-Synthetic Opioids like Morphine and Codeine, on the other hand, are derived from naturally occurring compounds in Opium pods, purified, and turned into medicine.

Synthetic Opioids are frequently used as cutting agents in other narcotics (particularly Heroin and Cocaine) or pressed into tablet form and marketed as counterfeit Painkillers on the street.
